Music possesses the unique ability to evoke emotions, tell stories, and express the essence of a culture. As a universal language, it holds the power to communicate shared experiences and foster empathy among people from different backgrounds. It is supposed to be a sign of collaboration, a muse, and an inspiration. Yet this year, the event titled “Who am I? An Israeli Song,” under the leadership of Dr. Talila Eliram, marking the 20th conference of this phenomenal music celebration, was held eight months into the “Iron Sword” war, with sirens calling for immediate shelter and intensive rockets launched towards all parts of Israel. And yet, it did not stop hundreds of people from gathering at the event to celebrate some of the most popular classical music and give recognition to the composers and musicians.
The event, sponsored by the Dangoor Centre for the second year and initiated and organized by the Department of Music in collaboration with Galei-Zahal, the IDF radio station, exemplifies the potential of music as a medium of healing and hope. This two-day event presented a vibrant celebration of Israeli music, bringing together people who share a love of classical Israeli music and seek a moment of escapism from these difficult times.
The event brought together over 200 people for the conference day and filled the theatre with 800 people for the musical event the following evening, celebrating and embracing composers, singers, beloved songs, scholars, and music enthusiasts who shared a common passion for music.
