New book written by Prof. Rumiana Marinova-Christidi, Colleague and friend of the Dangoor Centre
The monograph “Bulgaria and Israel (1948-1990)” is the first comprehensive academic study on the issue of Bulgaria’s relations with the Jewish state. The theme of the salvation of Bulgarian Jews is continued and its projections and significance after the Second World War are traced. The specifics of Bulgarian-Israeli relations, the differences between Soviet and Bulgarian policy on the Jewish question and Bulgaria’s place as a mediator with a specific role between Moscow and Tel Aviv during the Cold War are highlighted. The participation of the Jewish population in the development of socialist Bulgaria and the activities of the Public Cultural and Educational Organization of the Jews during this period are analyzed. The book is based on a wealth of archival material, with documents from the Zionist Archive in Jerusalem and the Archive of the Communist State Security in Bulgaria being particularly important and shedding new light on the factual background.
